HIES SURVEY 2014

Liberia Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2013-2014

Why does Liberia need the HIES?

The Household Income & Expenditure Survey (HIES) was first planned in 1963 at the national level with 752 sample households, but was abandoned due to financial reasons. However, a limited survey was carried out in Monrovia and its environs from November 1964 to December 1964 consisting of 124 of the sampled of 752 households. Based on the results of this limited survey, the first Base - Period for the Monrovia Consumer Price Index (MCPI) was derived, and until date is being used in calculating the inflation rate and indices for Liberia.

 Survey design

The sample for the HIES will be nationally representative, and also allow for disaggregated county level estimates along with numbers for rural/urban stratas. A two stage clustered sampling model is anticipated with one nationally representative cycle. The size of the sample is expected to be about 8360 households, if all of the criteria listed need to be accounted for. The fieldwork will take place for 12 months, starting January 2014 and ending December2014. The following modules are anticipated in the Survey.
