ABOUT LISGIS

Legal Status  LISGIS Profile
Board of Directors  Employment at LISGIS

Conflict and capacity constraints have resulted in limited socio-economic and geospatial information that has led to statistical gaps in Liberia. The majority of data and major censuses prior to 1985 were lost during the civil conflict, thus rendering historical statistics unavailable.

Soon after the civil conflict ended in 2004, the government established an autonomous agency, the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) by a Legislative Act with a mandate to compile statistical data on the status of demographic and other socioeconomic indicators and to coordinate the dissemination of official statistics on Liberia.

At present, LISGIS serves as the prime, authoritative agency of Government responsible for collecting, managing, coordinating, supervising, evaluating, analyzing, disseminating and setting quality standards for statistical and associated geo-information for overall national socioeconomic reconstruction and development. LISGIS is primarily tasked to formulate and implement national strategies, programs and policies for the development and management of a National Statistical and Geo-Information System and an integrated gender and environment sensitive National Statistical and Spatial Database in Liberia.  Additionally, LISGIS is also required to coordinate, monitor and supervise the NSSDS and NSSD to allow for the provision of holistic gender and geographic sensitive analysis for timely, relevant and acceptable standards of Information to Institutions of the Government, the business and the wider national and international communities.

LISGIS is expected to consolidate the capacity to supply statistics for informed decision-making and good governance. In addition, it is tasked with building strategic partnerships and promoting collaboration between producers and users of data (country analysis, research, surveys and specialized studies) to improve information-sharing on lessons learned and good practices.
